What is NEET counselling ?

NEET counselling refers to the process of allotment of medical colleges to candidates post their NEET exam exam. The process is conducted by Medical Education bodies of India and is a month long process where students are judged on their merit and alloted colleges accordingly. The all India Quota counselling is conducted through MCC Portal.

What is NEET exam ?

NEET which stands for national eligibility cum entrance test is an all INDIA entrance test which is conducted to admit students to medical courses in INDIA. The exam is held on the first Sunday of MAY every year and has one of the highest number of applicants applying for any undergraduate entrance test in our country with around 24 lakhs students applying for the exam in the year 2024.

Who conducts NEET Exam?

NEET exam is conducted by NTA i.e. National Testing Agency, which is a government body under the Ministry of Education. NTA was set up as a specialized body for conduction of exams in INDIA. Since 2019 NEET exam has been conducted by NTA, it is responsible for setting the paper, successful conduction of the exam, publishing results and allotting ranks to candidates. The role of the body ends with the publishing of result the later on counselling and other processes are conducted by other government bodies.

Who conducts NEET counselling ?

NEET counselling is conducted to allot medical seats to candidates on the basis of their merit. NEET counselling is majorly conducted at two levels which are the All India Quota Counselling and State Quota Counselling.15% seats in state government run medical colleges are allotted through AIQ counselling whereas 85% seats are allotted through State Quota Counselling. The medical counselling body of each state are responsible for the conduction of State Quota Counselling whereas Medical Counselling Committee or MCC is responsible for conducting AIQ counselling.

Which body conducts AIQ counselling for NEET ?

All India Quota Counselling is conducted to fill the All India Quota seats in medical colleges which accounts for around 15% seats in state government run medical colleges and 100% seats in central government run medical colleges. All India Quota Counselling is conducted by MCC ( Medical Council Committee ) . The AIQ counselling is conducted for nationwide students, it is an open counselling where any student who has appeared for the Neet exam and qualified the exam with more than 50 percentile marks of their particular category can apply and can participate in the seat allocation process. The Central government Institutes such as AIIMS, JIPMER admits students into their institute only through AIQ counselling and there is no State Quota seats in such Institutes. Students with no particular state domicile can appear in AIQ counselling to achieve seats in Medical Colleges. Cut-off of medical colleges allotted through All India Counselling are generally higher than seats allocated through State Quota Counselling seats.

Who conducts State Quota Counselling for NEET ?

State Quota Counselling is conducted to allot seats to students in medical colleges of that particular state. It is not an open counselling and students with domicile of only that particular state can apply for the 85% seats available for state counselling in that state. The dates for state counselling vary according to different states and each state has their own body which conducts the state level counselling of that particular state. The cut-off of State Quota counselling for most states are generally lower than AIQ counselling due to reduced number of applicants in that particular state whereas for states like Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh the State Quota Counselling cutoffs are higher than the AIQ counselling due to Increased cutoffs.

NEET AIQ counselling dates

NEET AIQ counselling will commence on 14th August 2024, with MCC releasing the notification regarding different stages of the counselling and entire process. The different stages of the AIQ are expected to be as follows, the below provided structure is provided according to the previous year counselling structures :
  • Registration : The first stage where candidates provide their academic and personal details and pay the registration fees. The dates allotted for registration are from 14th  August to 21st August.
  • Choice Filling : Post the registration process candidates are provided with the opportunity to make a list of their preferred colleges in this stage. The college allotted to a candidate depends on the preference list, merit acquired by the candidate and the reservation policy adopted by the counselling body. The expected dates for choice filling are from  16th to 20th August
  • Seat Allotment : After the choice filling process is completed students are allotted the colleges considering their merit, preference list and reservations. The results of seat allotment is expected to be published on 23rd August.
  • Uploading of Documents : Candidates who are satisfied with allotted seats and wants to pursue their course in that college will now have to submit their documents and freeze the seats. The documents are uploaded for verification process.
  • College Reporting : Once the documents are verified candidates will be required to download the allotment letter and report to allotted colleges with other documents as stated by the colleges or counselling body and fees for admission. Candidates who are not satisfied with the allotment can opt for the later rounds for a better seat allotment. Students are required to report to their allotted colleges between 24th to 29th august.

What is the registration fees for NEET counselling ?

The counselling bodies charges a minimum amount to carry on the counselling process of candidates. The registration fees vary according to category of appearing candidates :
  • Unreserved/ EWS/ OBC candidates : 1000 INR
  • SC/ST/ PwD candidates : 500 INR

Who can appear for NEET counselling ?

The eligibility to appear for NEET counselling, states that a candidate must :
1. Citizen of India
2. Must have qualified NEET exam with more than 50 percentile marks

How to apply for NEET UG counselling ?

Step to apply for NEET UG 2024 counselling are listed below :
  1. Visit the MCC website at https://mcc.nic.in/
  2. Click on the menu icon to access the navigation menu.
  3. Select “UG Medical” from the menu options.
  4. Click on the “Important Links” sections.
  5. Click on the “Registration” link
  6. Enter your basic details as required in the registration form.
  7. Complete the registration procedure by following the instructions provided.
  8. Once registered, proceed to choice filling and locking.
  9. Select your preferred colleges and courses.
  10. After finalizing your choices, lock your selections to confirm them, and then submit your choices

What are the required documents to apply for NEET Counselling ?

The documents required to apply for NEET counselling are :
  • NEET UG 2024 Admit Card
  • NEET UG 2024 Score Card/Rank Card
  • Class 10th Mark Sheet and Passing Certificate
  • Class 12th Mark Sheet and Passing Certificate
  • Date of Birth (DOB) Certificate
  • Category Certificate (if applicable)
  • Identity Proof (Aadhar Card, Voter ID, Passport, etc.)
  • Passport-size Photographs
  • Provisional Allotment Letter
  • Transfer Certificate (TC) from the Institute last attended
  • Migration Certificate (if applicable)

Who conducts state Quota Counselling ?

The state quota counselling is conducted to fill 85% seats of colleges in state run medical colleges. Each state have their separate counselling body and conduct separate counselling independent of MCC. The state quota counselling stages are similar to those of AIQ counselling and each state medical council announces its notification separately on their portal and admits students into their colleges.
