Gate exam is one of the most popular examinations in India conducted by the top seven IITs 

Overview about GATE examination 

The GATE is an entrance test, is conducted and planned for Postgraduate degree programs in Engineering /Technology as well as in employment opportunity in the Government sector enterprises.


Educational qualification/requirements for GATE 

Applicants must have completed their 10th , 12th and an undergraduate degree from science background and must have at least 60 percentile or 6 CGPA from a reputed University.

To note that there is no specific age requirement for appearing in the GATE examination


Reservation criteria 

Out of all the conditions for reservation in GATE exam, some of them do have norms with the Government of India which significantly hold the number of seats in total as well as some of the seats are reserved for SC, ST, OBC and Pwd category candidates. 

As per the gate 2024 15% of seats are reserved for minor categories 


GATE exam structure& pattern


GATE exam is a Computer Based Test (CBT) mode consisting of 29 topics.

The content of the test is as follows:

General Assessment (GA): common section for all papers (15 marks)

Subject-specific section: based on selected paper (85 marks)total test time is of 3 hours. It consists of multiple choice questions (MCQ)

The exam has negative marking for the incorrect attempts -⅓ marks would be deducted for each wrong answers.

The syllabus involves a core and deeper understanding of engineering subjects

The gate exam 2025 is likely to be conducted on 1st,2nd,15th&16th of February 2025 

The registration will likely to be start by mid or the end week of August 2024 

As for the admit card its to be released on January 2025 .

The conducted body  for gate exam 2025 is IIT Roorkee 


Registration for GATE exam 2025 


For registration of gate exam follow the below steps :

  1. Visit the official portal of  GATE exam  Gate 2025 portal
  2. Click on registration option and select the new user option 
  3. Fill in the details asked 
  4. Then after filling the details a OTP or one time password is generated 
  5. Then Enter the email ID and number. Enter the otp and verify.
  6. Fill the application form
  7. Once its done  choose the course  that you are willing to appear for getting the admission 
  8. Upload the  required documents: documents such as scanned jpg converted photograph ,scanned signature and all other details asked or mentioned 


The registration fee for GATE varies depending on the category of the candidate:


For General/OBC candidates: It is typically around ₹1500 to ₹2000.

For SC/ST/PwD candidates: It is usually lower, around ₹750 to ₹1250.

Suggestions for gate exam aspirants during the exam day 


Candidates must keep following documents/stationary ready for the exam

  1. Admit CardCandidates must carry their GATE admit card which must be downloaded from official GATE website.
  2. Photo ID Proof :Never forget to carry original photo ID proof like (Aadhaar Card , PAN card, voter ID, driving license).It is used for verifying the candidate appearing for the exam.
  3. Stationery :Always carry a Transparent ballpoint pen for the exam to be on the safer side
  4. Photograph :Carry a recent passport-sized photograph, usually not required but good to have to be on the safer side.
  5. Dress Code :Wear simple and comfortable clothes, avoid the clothes with too many pockets.It is also preferred to wear sandals or slippers as shoes may sometimes need to removed and kept outside examination hall.
  6. Avoid Jewelry and other accessories like rings, bracelets, watches also the items like belts with large buckles must be avoided.
  7. Do not carry any kind of digital or electronics items including smartwatches, fitness bands or any other gadgets. 
  8. Never carry wallet, bag and other personal items as it is not allowed in the examination hall.

Tips for the Exam Day :

  1.  Arrive Early : Reach the examination center at least an hour before the reporting time.
  2.  Never forget to read the instructions provided on the admit card also the one which is provided at the examination center.
  3.  Stay Calm : In order to get the better result . Be relaxed and do the best

  1. Public Sector Undertakings ( PSUs): Having signed a MOU with IITs for recruitment of GATE candidates, PSUs like SAIL, BHEL, MDL, NHAI can be one of the top priorities for the students. Other than a good GATE score, a personal interview and group discussion is also required to land a job in PSUs
  2. The exams of state electricity boards where you can get jobs are West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL), Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), Odisha Power Generation Corporation Limited (OPGEN).
